Goku

Goku is the main character of the Dragonball series. He is one of the Saiyans. His Saiyan name is Kakarot. As a child, Goku was sent to Earth to destroy all life and make the planet ready for its new inhabitants to whom the Saiyans would sell Earth to. He was discovered and taken care of by an old man named Gohan. As a child, Goku was unruly and unusually powerful. He wanted nothing to do with Gohan's kindness. One day, Goku bumped his head and was seriously injured. When he recovered, he was completely changed. He married Chi Chi and had two children, Gohan and Goten. Goku was the first of the modern Saiyans to become a Super Saiyan. When a Saiyan goes "super", he becomes EXTREMELY powerful and his hair stands up and becomes golden in color. A yellow aura then surrounds him. During battle, Goku likes to spare the life of his opponents so he can fight them again one day. Late in the series, Goku and Vegeta fused together to become Vegitto and then later Gogeta(in the Dragonball GT series).
Gohan

Gohan is Goku's first son. He is named after Goku's adopted grandfather. In his childhood, Gohan's power was clearly evident, but his mother didn't want him to change. She wanted him to be a scholar. Since the Earth was constantly being invaded by evil forces, Gohan concentrated on fighting. He was trained by Piccolo after Goku gave his life to stop his evil brother Raditz. Before Raditz died, he (Raditz) told Piccolo that two other Saiyans would come to Earth to get the dragonballs and wish for immortality. Gohan then underwent extensive training from Piccolo to get ready for the evil Saiyans. Gohan is really half human and half Saiyan but he has every characteristic of a full-blood Saiyan, including the Saiyan tail. In the Dragonball Z series, Gohan was constantly said to possess unfathomable "hidden" power. During the fight against Cell, Gohan unleashed his hidden power and became the most powerful character when he was the first to become a second level Super Saiyan or Super Gohan as he was called. He then destroyed Cell with a powerful Kamehameha blast. He eventually fulfilled his mother's dream and became a scholar.
Goten

Goten is Goku's second son. His talent was greatly apparent at a very young age just like his older brother Gohan. He became a Super Saiyan at the tender age of seven, completely surpising Gohan. Goten is able to fuse with Trunks to form a more powerful character called Gotenks. As a result of lack of discipline, Goten did not maintain his ability and had to be "forced" to join the Budokai tournament by his father.
Piccolo

Piccolo is one of the Nameks. He is the offspring of Daimon, a character who was pure evil. Daimon had split apart from Kami-sama. Because of this, Piccolo and Kami share a spiritual link so if one of them dies, they both die. Goku killed Daimon in an early Budokai tournament but we swore that Piccolo would avenge his death. He then became an enemy and rival of Goku. Piccolo is one of the original "evil" characters but he went through changes and eventually became one of the most powerful allies to Goku and the other heroes. Throughout the series, Piccolo developed a love and sense of care for Gohan and that was the key thing that led to his change. He trained Gohan and was like a father to him when Goku died the first time. He eventually rejoined with Kami-sama and became a character called Kamiccolo. Piccolo was always one of the most powerful characters throughout the series.
Vegeta

Vegeta is another character who was "evil" at first. He is a Saiyan and the prince of the planet Vegeta, the Saiyans' home planet. He and Nappa were the two Saiyans that came to Earth for the dragonballs when Goku died the first time. The Earthlings beat them to the dragonballs, however, and they wished Goku back to life. Goku beat Nappa and Vegeta killed Nappa for disobeying him. Goku then eventually overcame Vegeta but did not kill him. When Goku became a Super Saiyan, Vegeta was the only one who understood the powerful change Goku underwent. Throughout the series, he is fueled by his rivalry with Goku and he gradually changed into a good character. He was the second to become a Super Saiyan. Vegeta settled down with Bulma and they had a son, Trunks, and eventually a daughter named Bra.
Trunks

Trunks is the son of Vegeta and Bulma. He is first seen when he travels back in time to Earth and kills Frieza Bot and King Cold. He was a Super Saiyan then so everyone thought that it was Goku who saved them but they soon discovered that this wasn't Goku. Vegeta was puzzled in trying to figure out where yet another Saiyan could have come from. Goku arrived 3 hours later. Trunks had news from the future about a powerful group of cyborgs led by Cell who would kill everyone except for himself. He said that Goku would die of a rare heart disease before the cyborgs came so he gave Goku some medicine so that he wouldn't die. Goku wasn't gonna tell anyone what Trunks had told him but Piccolo overheard the whole thing so he told everyone. He left out the part about Trunks parents because otherwise, Trunks would probably have never been born. Trunks became a Super Saiyan at the age of eight. He carried a powerful sword that read "HOPE!" on its blade. It is later learned in Movie #13 that Trunks received his sword from a brave warrior named Tabion from the planet Konack. Goku taught Trunks and Goten to do the dance of fusion to become Gotenks. Under the Guidance of Goku and Vegeta, Trunks was one of the most powerful characters in the series.
Krillin

Krillin is one of Goku's longtime and best friends. He's a monk and he and Goku received training from Master Roshi. Though he was no where near as strong as Goku (human limitations), he was as courageous as a lion. Krillin gradually became a stronger character but his significance faded as the Super Saiyans moved onto the scene. Krillin eventually got married, had a kid, and grew his hair back.
Master Roshi

Master Roshi is a martial arts master who trained both Goku and Krillin. He was the first character to use the powerful Kamehameha fireball when he used it in a Budokai tournament. He was an important character in the original Dragonball but his significance faded in the Z series.
King Kai

King Kai is one of the four Kaiou gods in "the next dimension" of the Dragonball universe. His Japanese name is Kaiou-sama. He lives on his own planet which is only about 50 meters in diameter. He has a pet monkey named bubbles and a pet cricket named Jeffrey. Goku, Piccolo, Yamcha, Tien, and Chaou-zu received training from King Kai after they died. They were then wished back to the living world where they were even stronger than before. The gravity on King Kai's planet is 10 times that of Earth. To get to his planet, the Z heroes (those that died) had to travel a long road called Snake Way that was really thousands of miles long. King Kai considers himself to be somewhat of a comedian. He communicates with Goku telepathically throughout the Z series.
Frieza

Frieza was one of the "major" villians who first appeared after the battle between Goku and Vegeta. Frieza was first seen on the planet Namek where he was in search of the dragonballs so he could wish for immortality and rule the universe. Frieza is able to transform three times, each time becoming more powerful. During the battle with Goku, he killed Krillin out of frustration and fueled Goku's anger, thus causing Goku to turn into a Super Saiyan. Goku defeated Frieza and was gonna let Frieza live but Frieza tried one last time to kill Goku. Goku finished him off then Namek exploded because Frieza had fired a huge blast at the planet earlier that would take five minutes to destroy the planet. Everyone else on the Namek had beed teleported to Earth. Frieza's father, King Cold, found his remains and turned him into a cyborg called the Frieza-bot. They then came to Earth to get revenge on Goku but they both met their fate at the hands of Future Trunks.
The Ginyu Force

The Ginyu Force is Frieza's elite private army. The members are(from top to bottom), Burter, Recoome, Captain Ginyu, Jeice and Guldo. Each member has a special ability. Burter has super speed, Recoome is incredibly strong, Captain Ginyu can swap bodies with his opponents, Jeice can fire a "crusher" ball, and Guldo has the ability to freeze time. They were seen in the Frieza series but all five met their fate at the hands of Goku and Vegeta(Goku beat 'em up, Vegeta finished 'em off). Jeice was the only one that Vegeta beat on his own. Captain Ginyu got trapped into the body of a frog while trying to switch bodies with Vegeta. Vegeta also killed Guldo, saving Krillin and Gohan's life. Facing the Ginyu Force and Frieza was the turning point in Gohan and Vegeta's power as they were close to becoming Super Saiyans.
Perfect Cell

Cell was one of the most powerful villians in the Z series. He and the other cyborgs were created by Dr. Gero. Dr. Gero took the best aspects of the Saiyans, Nameks, Humans and Frieza's race, and combined them into a single being called Cell. He was supposed to be the ultimate fighting machine. He absorbed the other cyborgs and became "Perfect Cell." He then believed that no one could beat him. That's when the "Cell Game" started. He spared Trunks life when Trunks forfeited the battle against him. He always thought that Goku would be his toughest challenge until Goku forfeited his battle against Cell and turned it over to Gohan. Gohan unleashed his hidden power and was the first to become a second stage Super Saiyan. As "Super Gohan", he beat Cell and Cell decided to destroy the Earth but failed when Goku teleported him to King Kai's planet. Cell then blew up and killed Goku, King Kai, Bubbles and Gregory, but Cell still survived. He came back to Earth but he was no match for Gohan. With the help of Goku's spirit, Gohan destroyed Cell with a Kamehameha, completely vaporizing him so he couldn't regenerate.
Majin Buu

Majin Buu was created by a guy named Babi Di. He was the last and most powerful villian that the Z heroes faced (in the Z series). Buu can absorb his enemies and their power while in battle. When he does this, he takes on a form similar to the character that he absorbed. Buu was confronted by Mr. Satan and Mr. Satan convinced Buu to not commit any more evil deeds. This worked until the evil in Buu rose up and split apart from his good side. His evil side faced off against his good side and won. The evil side then reabsorbed the good and Buu was evil once again. Buu was the most powerful of all the villians the Z heroes ever fought. In the final battle with Buu, Goku and Vegeta fused and became Vegetto. The went inside Buu and rescued everyone Buu had ever absorbed. This left Buu weakened but he still had enough energy to blow up the Earth and he does. The fight is continued on another planet where Buu is finally defeated. After this, the dragonballs were used to wish the Earth and everyone else back to life.

Other Characters
YAMCHA Yamcha is one of the human fighters. He looks like Goku with a scar on his left cheek. He can control his energy and "steer" his fireballs while in battle. Yamcha is kind of a pretty boy, and Bulma used to be his girlfriend but things didn't work out.
TIENSHINHAN Tienshinhan (a.k.a. Tien) is also a human fighter. He is quite muscular and has a third eye on his forehead. He used to be an assassin until he fought Goku in a Budokai tournament. After he barely beat Goku, he became a good guy and sought training from Master Roshi. Tien is the inventor of the popular and very effective "Solar Flare," which seems to shoot out from his third eye, blinding his opponent.
CHAOUT-ZU Chaout-zu is another human fighter and a close frien of Tienshinhan. He looks like a three feet tall clown. At first, Chaout-zu was a very weak fighter but he gradually got stronger as the Z series progressed toward the end.
BULMA Bulma has been Goku's friend since the first Dragonball. She wants to use the dragonballs to wish for a boyfriend. Bulma is very smart and even though she can't fight, her technical mind comes in handy. She used to be Yamcha's girlfriend but things didn't work out. She later married Vegeta and had a son, Trunks, and eventually a daughter.
CHI CHI Chi Chi is the wife of Goku. They met in a Budokai tournament and they got married once the tournament was over. Her and Goku had two kids, Gohan and Goten. Chi Chi is very protective of Gohan. She wants him to grow up to be a scholar and doesn't like when Gohan fights. She doesn't push Goten quite as hard academically.
KAMI-SAMA Kami-sama is one of the Nameks. He is the "good" half of Piccolo. He is also the guardian of the Earth, kind of like a mortal god. Since he and Piccolo are the same person in two bodies, if one dies, so does the other. He lives on a lookout with Mr. Popo high over the Earth.
MR. POPO Mr. Popo lives on the lookout with Kami. He is basically Kami's assistant. He is short with pitch black skin and red lips. He travels with his flying carpet. He found Kami's spaceship, thus giving Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma a way to get to Namek to find the Namek dragonballs.
KARIN-SAMA Karin-sama is another mystical character on Earth like Kami. He also lives on a lookout directly beneath Kami's. Not very much is known about Karin except he is the grower of magical "Senzu Beans," which when eaten, give fighters back all their strength and heals their injuries, even broken bones.
BEEDEL Beedel was Gohan's wife. She was the daughter of Mr. Satan. Gohan taught Beedel how to fly. She faught crime with him and she called herself the Great Saiyaman 2. She and Gohan later have a daughter named Pan.
PAN Pan was the daughter of Gohan and Beedel. She was one-fourth Saiyan and she and Bra were the only female Saiyans that played a notable role in Dragonball.
BRA Bra was the daughter of Vegeta and Bulma. She was one-fourth Saiyan and she and Pan were the only female Saiyans that played a notable role in Dragonball.
MR. SATAN Mr. Satan was a human pro-wrestler. He calls himself the "World Champion," even though he could be easily defeated by any of the Z Warriors. He is the father of Beedel and he is the strongest human that can't channel energy.
TABION Tabion (pronounced "Tapion") was a warrior from the planet Konack. He is seen in movie 13, "Goku's Dragon Fist," as "the legend of the brave warrior." He has half of a monster called Hildegarn sealed inside of his body. His brother, Minoshia, has the other half of Hildegarn sealed within his body. During the movie, his brother is killed, and Hildegarn escapes from his body and rejoins. Goku eventually overcame Hildegarn after going SSJ #3 and using his "Dragon Fist" technique. He plays a magical flute and has a sword as gifts from the gods, used to contain Hildegarn. After Hildegarn is defeated, Tabion gives his magical sword to Trunks.
MINOSHIA Minoshia is the brother of Tabion. He is killed by Hildegarn at the beginning of movie #13.
HILDEGARN Hildegarn was a statue that is brought to life by the Black Magicians on the planet Konack in movie #13. The Black Magicians then tried to use Hildegarn to take over the universe but Hildegarn was stopped by Tabion, Meoshia and a Konack priest. Hildegarn was cut in half and was sealed inside of Tabion and Meoshia. After his halves rejoined in movie #13, he was killed by Goku.
HOI Hoi is one of the Black Magicians from the planet Konack. He tricked Goku and the others into using Shenron to release Tabion from the oracle in movie #13. Hildegarn steps on him and kills him toward the end of the movie.
KING YAMA King Yama is one of the gods in the next dimension like King Kai. When people die in Dragonball Z, they go to King Yama and he decides where they go from there. He allowed Goku to travel down Snake Way to seek King Kai's training when Goku died the first time. King Yama is very big and has red skin.
DENDE Dende is a young Namek. He is first seen in the Frieza saga. He looks like a young Piccolo and unlike Piccolo, Dende can't fight. He is one of the Nameks that has the power to heal. If it weren't for him, Piccolo probably would have died again after his battle with Frieza. Dende eventually replaces Kami-sama as the new "kami" of Earth.
MASTER GURU Master Guru is the eldest Namek. He is very old and fat. He is a healer like Dende. Master Guru can bring out fighters hidden power. He did this to Krillin and Gohan and made them much stronger than they were when they fought Vegeta and Nappa on Earth.
NAIL Nail is also a Namek. He is a fighter and looks like Piccolo's twin brother. Like Piccolo, Nail is a very powerful figher with a power level that peaks out around 45,000. He wasn't powerful enough to defeat Frieza though. After Piccolo got wished back from the dead, he found the injured Nail on Namek, badly beaten. Nail told Piccolo about Frieza and his men and then the two fused together, making Piccolo's power level skyrocket to around 800,000. Nail serves as Master Guru's bodyguard.
YAJIROBE Yajirobe is a human Samurai Monk. Yajirobe loves to eat all the time and he is very fat. He doesn't fight much but in the fight against Vegeta, he chopped off Vegeta's tail, shrinking Vegeta back to normal and giving Gohan and Krillin (Goku couldn't move) a fighting chance. Yajirobe got some Senzu Beans from Karin to heal Goku after his fight with Vegeta, making Goku well enough to go to Namek and help Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma get the Namek dragonballs.
BARDOCK Bardock is Goku's father. He looks like Goku but he wears Saiyan armor like Vegeta. He is the inventor of the "Moon Blast," which creates an energy souce that simulates full moon light. This technique enables a Saiyan to transform without the presence of a real moon. Bardock saw Goku's future and wanted to change. He was the last Saiyan to fight Frieza before the planet Vegeta was blown up.
RADITZ Raditz is Goku's brother. Unlike Goku, Raditz didn't bump his head when he was young so he was a bad Saiyan. He came to Earth to get Kakarot (Goku) to come back with him so they could conquer planets with Nappa and Vegeta. Of course, Goku refused his offer so they fought. Raditz had a power level that was around 1,200. That was nothing compared to Vegeta but Raditz was the most powerful character that Goku and the rest of the Earth fighters had faced up to that point. It took Goku and Piccolo (who was Goku's enemy at the time) to defeat Raditz. Goku held him while Piccolo charged up his "Special Beam Cannon," which killed Raditz and Goku. The battle against Raditz marked the beginning of Dragonball Z.
NAPPA Nappa was Vegeta's right hand man and bodyguard. Even though Vegeta was much stronger than Nappa, whose power level was 4,000, the Earth fighters didn't stand a chance against him until Goku returned from the dead and defeated him. Nappa was then killed by Vegeta for being defeated by a "low class" Saiyan. Before Nappa was killed, he caused Tien to die (made him use all of his energy in a blast), he caused Chaou-zu to die (Chaou-zu self destructed in an attempt to kill Nappa also), and he killed Piccolo (Piccolo jumped in front of a blast intended for Gohan), and he and Vegeta made "Saibamen" which killed Yamcha. Nappa served as the commander in chief of the whole Saiyan army.
ZARBON Zarbon is one of Frieza's close assistants. He has long hair and pale green skin. He was at one time more powerful than Vegeta and he nearly killed Vegeta, but, he made the mistake of not making sure Vegeta was dead. Vegeta healed of his first battle with Zarbon and killed Zarbon the second time around.
DODORIA Dodoria is Frieza's other close assistant. He is less vane than Zarbon. Dodoria is fat, pink, and looks kind of like a thorny pink Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. He wasn't quite as strong as Zarbon, and Vegeta killed him after Dodoria told Vegeta that it was Frieza who blew up the Saiyans' home planet.
KEWI Kewi is the leader of Frieza Planet #79. After Vegeta's near fatal duel with the Earth fighters, Vegeta went to this planet to be healed. Kewi was as strong as Vegeta before Vegeta fought the Earth fighters. Since Saiyans get a lot stronger after being almost killed, Vegeta's power level went up considerably higher than Kewi's. Kewi was killed by Vegeta on Namek. While on Earth, Vegeta learned how to hide his power level from scouters and he learned how to read power levels without scouters. He let Kewi think that he had a lower power level before killing him. After Kewi was killed, Frieza commented that he didn't care for Kewi anyway.
KING COLD King Cold is Frieza's father. He looks very much like 2nd stage Frieza but he's a little bigger. When Goku defeated Frieza on Namek, King Kold came along and collected what was left of Frieza (bits, pieces). He then fitted Frieza with mechanical parts, making him a cyborg called Frieza-bot. This made Frieza even stronger than he was before. They then went to Earth to seek revenge. When they got to Earth, they planned to terrorize everyone and then blow up the planet. Shortly after they got to Earth, a golden haired boy with a Capsule Corporation jacket on came and told them to stop. They read his power level to be only five (typical human). The Z fighters thought this was Goku but it wasn't. This was Future Trunks in his Super Saiyan form. He was hiding his power (it was really in the millions). He took his sword and easily killed Frieza and King Cold also met his fate at the hands of Trunks.
TURLES Turles was the main villin in The Tree of Might. He was a Saiyan and he looked exactly like Goku but he wore Saiyan armor. Gohan even thought Turles was his father. Like Raditz, Turles wanted Goku and Gohan to join him and conquer planets because it was the "Saiyan heritage" to do so. He also planted the Tree of Might on Earth which would suck out all of Earth's energy and transfer it to the fruit of this huge tree. Turles and his men would then eat the fruit and become the most powerful beings in the universe. After nearly defeating Goku and the Earth fighters, Turles met his fate in the form of a Spirit Bomb from Goku. The Spirit Bomb was powered by the fruit of the tree so it was powerful enough to kill Turles. Turles was only seen in this movie and was never mentioned or seen in the Dragonball storyline.
DR. WHEELO Dr. Wheelo was the main villian in The Worlds Strongest. He was frozen in ice for over 50 years and only his "genius" brain survived. His assistant, Dr. Cochen, made his a robot body which was very powerful. Dr. Wheelo planned to find the strongest fighter in the world and steal his body. He said the combination of the world's strongest fighter and the world's smartest mind would be unstoppable. Goku was the strongest fighter in the world and Dr. Wheelo tried unsuccessfully to take Goku's body. After seeing that he couldn't, he tried to destroy the world but he met his fate at the hands of the Earth fighters and Goku's Spirit Bomb.
GARLIC JR. Garlic Jr. was the main villian in Deadzone. Deadzone became interesting from the beginning because unlike most villians, Garlic Jr. found the dragonballs and his wish for immortality was granted. His plans were to revive all the dead evil forces and take over the universe. He tried to open a deadzone and suck in Goku, Piccolo, Kami, Krillin, and Gohan but his plan didn't work. As he opened the deadzone, Gohan emerged from fallen rocks and his unbelievable hidden powers started to come out. He fired a blast and knock Garlic Jr. into his own deadzone. Garlic Jr. reappeared later in the storyline in an unsuccessful attempt to take over Kami's lookout and become the new kami (god/guardian of Earth).
